Studio Recitals
Recital Tips
Recitals are exciting as performers showcase their hard work, but they can also bring nerves and pressure. Here are some tips to help you navigate recital day and enjoy the experience while performing your best.
1
Practice, practice, practice! To prepare for a recital, you need to combine consistent practice and a good understanding of the music. Listen to various recordings—or one you really like—and practice consistently, even if it's for shorter periods of time. If you're playing with an accompanist, set up at least one or two rehearsals with them to practice how your part fits in with the other parts.
2
Visualize. Walking out on stage (or to the front of the room), bow, and visualize every step of the performance through to the final bow as a mental way to practice the performance. It is also helpful to practice playing for other people.
3
Dress Rehearsal. Find the outfit you are going to wear, and do a practice performance. For girls, jewelry like earrings, necklaces, and bracelets can sometimes buzz when they come in contact with the instrument. For guys, if you are wearing a tie or collared shirt, check that it doesn't interfere with playing position.
4
Recital Time! If possible, arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the recital is scheduled to start. This allows time to tune, warm-up, connect with your teacher and accompanist, etc. Then, when it is your turn, remember to take a deep breath, remind yourself that you've worked hard and you know your music. You've got this!
